A federal appeals court ruled that the case brought by three Kentucky men can proceed because exceptions in the law allow the Vatican to beheld liable for the actions of church employees acting within the scope of their employment in the United States.
The victim, who is now 27, is said to have suffered schizophrenia for years after the abuses.
Defence lawyers tried to use this to attack the victim's credibility, saying he probably dreamed up the abuse.
The September 1 initiative aim is to bring to the world a definitive solution to the global clergy abuse crisis
